"My Dreams for Equality"
My Dreams for Equality
Acrylic paint on canvas 41cm x 51cm 2020 |
I decided to use dreams to be able to express my feelings about the Black Lives Matter movement. This work was inspired by my friend Danielle Mielke. Her style including bright colors and almost blotchy-like shading inspired the shading in my piece. The names included in my piece are names of African Americas who have died in the face of police brutality. By using color, I thought it was a good way to express that every one of them is still alive in the spirit of this movement. |
This work is my first experimentation with oil pastels. I wanted to create a more abstract and fluid piece, capturing evolving and interchanging forms that body dysmorphia can take. This idea spurred from the dreams of society and the label of “perfection.” I drew inspiration from Wyatt Mills' brightly painted pieces picturing disjointed human forms. While Mills distorts his subjects to show raw emotion and chaos, I manipulate forms to illustrate how dreams distort our perception of reality. |

The constriction of Branding
Oil Pastel and acrylic paint on paper 60cm x 50cm 2020 |
This work addressed the dream of wealth through the names of popular brands, repeated patterns, and bright colors. The golden color frame surrounds an unhappy face, emphasizing the restrictions on creativity within the mass-production industry. The hands covering vital components of the face such as eyes and mouth also reflect this constriction. This piece was inspired by pop style and artists such as Christian Scott, who goes by BlackBean. |
